The Catalyst 4500-X was Cisco's workhorse fixed-configuration aggregation switch for a decade, and many still run in enterprise campuses. The platform is now fully end-of-life: sales ended in October 2020 and all software and security support ended October 31, 2025. This guide covers why to move, what to buy, what can go wrong, what it costs, and how to get it done.
Cisco announced end-of-sale and end-of-life for the 4500-X Series in October 2019. The last order date was October 30, 2020; software maintenance ended in October 2021; and the last day of Cisco support — including security — was October 31, 2025, now passed. A critical 4500-X advisory published today would have no patch and no escalation path.
The 4500-X runs IOS XE, but on a 3.x code train in maintenance mode for years, with no streaming telemetry, no model-driven programmability, and no Smart Licensing.
Performance is another ceiling. The family tops out at 40 x 10G SFP+ ports (plus optional 8 x 10G uplinks on some models), up to 800 Gbps of switching capacity, and 250 Mpps forwarding. There is no 25G or 100G anywhere, so you would be designing a 10G-only aggregation layer for the next five years.
Then there is the hidden cost of keeping it running:
To be fair: a healthy 4500-X in a low-traffic aggregation role or an isolated segment can still run for years. The point is not that it will fail tomorrow — every month past end-of-support makes failure more expensive and less recoverable.

Beyond raw numbers, the 9500 brings what the 4500-X cannot: native 25G/100G ports, StackWise-160/480 stacking plus StackWise Virtual, IOS XE 17.x with regular feature and security releases, and the DNA ecosystem — SDA fabric, NETCONF/YANG, streaming telemetry, and Smart Licensing.
Is it a drop-in replacement? Physically, mostly: same 1U form factor, and standard 10G SFP+ optics (SFP-10G-SR/LR) can usually be reused in SFP+/SFP28 ports — one of the least appreciated savings of this migration. What changes: power supplies (C9K-PWR-650WAC/930WDC family), stack cabling, and configuration translation (below).
Choosing the right model:
Configuration. Both run IOS XE, so VLANs, SVIs, routing, ACLs, and QoS concepts transfer directly. But do not paste old configs: the 4500-X runs a 3.x code train while the 9500 runs 16.8.1a or later, and commands have been deprecated or renamed. Rebuild against a current release, and treat VSS separately — it does not map one-for-one to 9500 StackWise or StackWise Virtual.
Physical compatibility. Both are 1U rack-mount units, but verify depth and weight (a populated 48Y4C is heavier than a 16-port 4500-X), airflow direction, and power connectors — the 4500-X uses 750 W supplies, the 9500 the C9K-PWR-650WAC-R / C9K-PWR-930WDC-R family. Confirm rack rails before the maintenance window.
Optics and cabling. 10G SFP+ modules are generally reusable on both SFP+ and SFP28 ports — a significant saving on a 32- or 40-port migration. Watch for three traps:
Licensing. The 4500-X used IP Base or Enterprise Services licenses; the 9500 uses Smart Licensing with Network Essentials or Network Advantage tiers — the -A SKUs ship with Network Advantage. There is no license transfer between platforms, so register the new switches during deployment.
Cutover and rollback. Aggregation-layer cutovers affect every access switch and application downstream, so sequence the migration in stages:
Post-cutover verification checklist: all ports up at expected speed; SFP DOM/DDM values in range; VLANs and SVIs reachable; routing adjacencies and gateways correct; spanning-tree root and blocked ports as designed; no CRC errors on reused fiber; NTP, SNMP, syslog, and telemetry reporting; license status compliant.
Most common pitfalls: pasting 4500-X configs verbatim (deprecated commands), missing airflow or rail differences, reusing marginal 10G fiber at 25G, assuming 40G QSFP+ modules fit QSFP28 uplinks, forgetting Smart Licensing registration, and cutting over the whole aggregation layer in one window.
Three realistic paths:
On total cost of ownership, hardware is only part of the picture. The 9500 delivers 25G/100G capacity with far better per-port power efficiency, and the EoL platform carries ongoing costs — maintenance, spare hunting, unpatched vulnerabilities, and the cost of an unplanned failure. A tested pre-owned 9500 removes all of those for a one-time outlay.
