The 9200L runs current IOS-XE: modern default security posture, current patches and a supported upgrade path. The 2960-X runs the older train and sits past its EOL milestones, so it will not receive new security fixes. For isolated segments the risk is manageable; for user-facing access with guest Wi-Fi or BYOD, current software is the better default.
PoE is where the generations separate most in practice. The C9200L-24P-4G-E and 48P models carry the power headroom for Wi-Fi 6 APs, pan-tilt cameras and phone fleets without recalculating budgets per closet. A used WS-C2960X-24PD-L still powers typical office loads — just verify the total budget against your device list before buying.
The 9200L's four 10G uplinks versus the 2960-X's two matters on stacks and camera backbones; two links per switch disappear quickly on an eight-unit stack. Both families stack to eight units, but FlexStack-Plus and StackWise-80 are incompatible, so refresh decisions happen stack by stack.
