Why Testing Matters on the Pre-Owned Market

Pre-owned network equipment fails in predictable places: dead ports on switches, failed power supplies on chassis, marginal SFP slots, and corrupted boot environments on routers and firewalls. A unit can boot, show a clean console, and still have a dead half of its port stack. That is why we test at the port level, not just at the boot level, and why we give you the test report instead of a verbal "tested, good."

Step 1: Incoming Inspection and Triage

When a batch arrives (from data-center decommissioning, enterprise upgrades, or trade-ins), we log every serial number and match units against their original configurations where available. Units are triaged into three lanes:

Step 2: Cleaning and Cosmetic Grading

If a single port fails, the unit does not ship as-is: the fault is repaired (port, PHY, or module swap) and the full test suite runs again.

Step 4: Software, Configuration, and Data Wipe

Before a unit is sale-ready we erase the previous owner's footprint:

  • Factory configuration reset (startup-config erased, not just "reload")
  • Local accounts, SSH keys, and certificates removed
  • Log files and any stored data cleared where the platform exposes them
  • OS level documented per unit (e.g., IOS-XE version, firmware) so you know what you are getting

Step 5: Burn-In Soak Test

After repair and reconfiguration, units run a burn-in period — typically 12 to 24 hours under load. Intermittent faults (a failing PSU that only drops under thermal stress, a marginal SFP slot) are exactly what a soak test catches. Units that pass soak move to final QA; units that fail go back to the repair lane and start over.

Step 6: Final QA and the Test Report

Each unit receives a final check: serial match, cosmetic grade, packaging standard (anti-static wrap, foam, double-wall box), and accessory check (rack ears, cables, modules as listed). You can request the test report for any unit before payment — it lists the serial number, test steps, pass results, and the OS/license state. This is standard practice for our customers; it is not a special favor.
