The Juniper EX4500-40F was the workhorse 10GbE access and aggregation switch of its generation. Today the platform is past end-of-life, and if you still run one, you carry risk you may not have priced in. The EX4500 is no longer a supported platform. Juniper announced end-of-life in 2015, ended sales in 2016, and the last EX4500 SKUs passed end-of-support at the end of 2022 (milestones vary by SKU, so verify your part number against Juniper’s EOL notices). No new Junos releases, no security patches, no official RMA or hardware support.

How they differ in role. The EX4400 is the modern high-density choice: 1GbE access with 802.3bt PoE for APs and cameras, 10G/25G SFP+ or SFP28 uplinks, 40G/100G QSFP28 uplinks, current Junos, and Virtual Chassis over its rear-panel 100GbE ports. The EX4600 is the 10G aggregation specialist: it keeps the SFP+ optics and forwarding personality of your EX4500, adds 40GbE QSFP+ uplinks with 4x10G breakout, and scales with expansion modules. One honest caveat: the EX4600 is now in Juniper’s EOL transition, so for the longest vendor lifecycle a new EX4400 is the safest bet — while a tested-used EX4600 still gives you a supported-until-2031 10G aggregation core at a fraction of new-list price.
Is it a drop-in replacement? Both targets are 1U, so they take less rack space than the 2U EX4500. Your 10G SFP+ optics are generally reusable — directly on the EX4600-40F (native SFP+ ports) and the EX4400-48F (12 native SFP+ ports). Copper-port EX4400 models (24T/24P/48P) have no native SFP+ cages, so uplink through the QSFP28 ports (40GbE QSFP+ optics or breakout DACs) or add a 4-port SFP+ expansion module. Selection advice: access with PoE for APs and cameras — the EX4400-48P or EX4400-24P; non-PoE access — the EX4400-24T; fiber access — the EX4400-48F; 10G aggregation that reuses your SFP+ optics — the EX4600-40F.
Configuration. Both targets run Junos, so config is mostly portable — but avoid a blind copy. Export with show configuration | display set, then re-map on the target: interface numbering differs, and VLANs, IRBs, LACP, spanning tree, and filters must be re-applied. On the EX4400, the rear QSFP28 ports are Virtual Chassis ports by default — switch them to network-port mode to use them as uplinks (use front extension modules for uplinks if you need them for VC).
Physical compatibility. Verify rack depth and rails, PSU type (AC vs DC — both platforms have AC and DC variants depending on SKU), and airflow: match the AFI/AFO or front/back suffix on your unit to your hot/cold aisle, or it will run hot. Reuse optics only after checking them against the target platform’s supported list — third-party DACs that worked on old Junos sometimes do not on newer releases.
Licensing. The EX4500 shipped with perpetual Junos (advanced features needed the EX-48-AFL license). Newer platforms follow Juniper’s current subscription model — for example, new EX4400 purchases are tied to a Junos OS subscription for updates and support. For a tested-used EX4600, confirm the entitlements included with the unit and whether support is transferable.
Cutover and rollback. Stage both switches, load and test the new config, then cut over with a rollback plan: keep the EX4500 powered and cabled until the new switch is stable for at least a day; use commit confirmed so a bad commit rolls back automatically.

You have three realistic financial paths. Buy new: a new EX4400 gives the longest lifecycle, full warranty, and current Junos subscription — at the highest upfront cost. Buy tested pre-owned: tested-used EX4400 and EX4600 units cost a fraction of list price, run current (or near-current) Junos, and come tested and warranty-backed. Because Juniper no longer sells the EX4500 — and the EX4600 leaves new-sale channels at the end of 2026 — the used market is the only source for these platforms. Extend the old EX4500: officially impossible — support is gone. Third-party maintenance plus rising power and spares cost usually makes this the most expensive option per year, and you stay on unpatched software. It is a stopgap, not a plan.
On TCO, the numbers matter more than the sticker price. The EX4400’s 1U, modern-silicon design draws far less power than the EX4500’s ~8 W per 10G port, and on -P models it powers APs and cameras directly, retiring separate PoE injectors.
